The Opal 30 was the pinnacle of the series, so there was no cutting corners when working on its successor. We took the design apart piece by piece, keeping only the proven three-way midwoofer-tweeter-woofer-woofer configuration with a rear bass-reflex port. Everything else underwent a thorough modernisation. The Opal 30 mkII plays with equal ease quietly and loudly: it loses neither bandwidth nor microdetail during late-night listening, and it retains dynamics and clarity at high levels. The redesigned crossover architecture also builds an even more coherent and natural sound, with only air-core coils in its path, free from the distortions of ferromagnetic cores.
The bass section gained more internal volume through a reconfiguration of the cabinet’s interior, with no change to the speaker’s outer dimensions, and through a lower tuning of the bass-reflex port. The new cellulose woofer cones are thicker, heavier, stiffer and more durable, and far more powerful magnetic systems guide them with great force and precision. The cones move like rigid pistons and withstand strong bass impulses even in highly dynamic passages. We replaced the stamped-steel basket with a precisely moulded, openwork plastic basket that reduces air noise and compression. The lowest registers are now deeper, more resolved and more structured, and the power handling of the whole system has clearly increased.
A three-way design demands an optimal middle of the band, so the Opal 30 mkII received a separate midrange driver built on the basis of the woofers. Its magnetic system, just as powerful as in the bass drivers, moves a lighter, rigid cellulose cone suited to detailed work at high accelerations. The effect is vocal nuance audible not only from the foreground, true strings and brass sections, and spectacular instrument resolution.
The highest tones are handled by the latest edition of our exceptional tweeter, with a diaphragm area larger by half and a very strong motor. The graphene-reinforced textile dome reaches into the ultrasonic range, while the vented design lets it extend deep downwards, allowing the tweeter to blend seamlessly with the midrange. A Faraday ring reduces distortion, and an efficient heatsink, familiar from professional stage drivers, ensures compression-free dynamics even during long, loud listening sessions. The high frequencies this driver produces place it, according to reviewers, among High-End products.
We set the driver baskets into the lacquered 22 mm front baffle to achieve a smooth transition from the cones to the cabinet surface, and the tweeter is mounted from the inside, as in exclusive loudspeaker systems. It works with a shallow horn formed directly in the baffle, which improves time alignment with the midrange and reduces reflections without introducing any horn coloration. The slender body made of 18 mm MDF, with internal ribbing and damping filling, was fine-tuned on the basis of measurements taken in our anechoic chamber with a laser vibrometer.
